What is IUSA and what can it do for the students of IU?

The Indiana University Student Association (IUSA) is the over-arching student government of Indiana University.  IUSA represents all students on campus and works to protect student rights, improve student life on campus, and advance our beloved university.   As students, you have the right and the responsibility to shape IU’s future.  IUSA is the organization positioned to do this.

How is IUSA organized?

IUSA is organized into three branches, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

The Executive Branch consists of four elected executive positions: the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Vice President of Congress.  In addition to these four executives there are three appointed positions; Chief of Internal Affairs, Chief of External Affairs, and Chief of Operations.  The executives and appointed positions oversee between twenty-five and thirty directors and co-directors in the executive branch

The Legislative Branch is the official voice of the student body.  It consists of sixty-two congress positions filled by students according to their residence or academic school.  The congress holds bi-weekly meetings and passes resolutions regarding issues aimed at improving student life on campus.  The Speaker of the House and Vice President of Congress oversee this branch.

The Judicial Branch of IUSA is the Supreme Court.  The court is made up of one Chief Justice and ten Associate Justices.  Once Congress appoints each justice with a two-thirds majority, he or she serves until graduation or resignation.

The Department of Student Rights and IU Student Aid are also divisions of IUSA. For more information visit http://www.indiana.edu/~iusa/.

As a student of Indiana University, you are already a member of IUSA.  The most important thing that you can do with this membership is VOTE this March 25 and 26.

Beyond this, you can become involved with IUSA in several ways.  In order to  become involved with an executive ticket, keep your eyes open for call-out meeting notices or visit the IUSA office on the third floor of the IMU Student Activities Tower.  Once the elections have been completed, an open application process will take place for students to apply for a directorship within the association.  Congress positions are elected so if you are seeking a congressional spot, contact the IUSA office to find out more information on tickets running as well as independent possibilities.

How do I vote?

The 2008 elections will be held on March 25 and 26.  In order to vote, you must be a student of IU Bloomington. To vote on these days simply visit the IUSA website at www.indiana.edu/~iusa.  Voting takes only a minute, and simply requires that you sign in with your valid IU student username and password.

IUSA is the “voice of the students” and in order for all to be fairly represented, it is imperative that students get out on these two days to vote.  This is your time at Indiana University-make the most of it.

How can my voice be heard?

After voting, becoming directly involved with IUSA is the best way to have your voice heard.  If you are not directly involved in day to day IU matters, your voice is represented by at least two congressmen or women (one from your residential area and one from your academic school).  Speak with them whenever possible to voice your concerns and ideas.  Additionally, your voice can be heard through emails (IUSA@indiana.edu) or by visiting the IUSA office on the third floor of the IMU Student Activities tower, suite 387.
